Norma si Arthur Lewis, un cuplu din suburbii cu un copil mic, bolnav, primesc cadou o cutie simpla de lemn, care aduce consecinte fatale si irevocabile. Un strain misterios, le aduce la cunostinta cum ca cutia ii va conferi detinatorului ei un milion de dolari o data cu apasarea unui buton de pe ea. Dar, apasand acel buton, in mod simultan cu altul, va cauza moartea unei persoane undeva in lume, undeva unde ei nu stiu.
Avand nevoie de bani pentru a-si salva propriul copil, Norma apasa butonul, dupa care se aude o impuscatura undeva in apropiere. Simtindu-se vinovata, ea incearca sa rezolve misterul crimei pe care de fapt ea o cauzase cu ajutorul cutiei. Dupa doar 24 de ore in care a avut in posesie cutia, Norma si Arthur se gasesc intr-o uimitoare dilema mortala si trebuie sa infrunte adevarata natura a umanitatii lor.
